Anusara Yoga

Anusara® yoga is an inspiring alignment-based hatha yoga system that I have practiced since its founding in 1997. I became a Certified Anusara Teacher in 2001, and I’ve been teaching classes and offering 200-Hour and 300-Hour Anusara Teacher Trainings ever since. I can summarize what I love about Anusara Yoga by describing its 3 main elements:

  1. The Philosophy of Nondual Tantra linked to Class Themes

Anusara yoga embraces Nondual Tantra as its foundational philosophy and vision of life.  One main teaching is that the great qualities of the heart, like inner beauty and inner strength, exist in all of us, and so the purpose of yoga is to know this and to allow it to permeate all of life. This vision inspires our class themes, so I introduce a theme at the beginning of class and weave it into the asana part of class with the asana instructions. The result is a fun, inspiring practice that everyone can enjoy.

  1. Universal Principles of Alignment (UPAs)

Anusara Yoga is an alignment-based hatha yoga practice, featuring Universal Principles of Alignment™ (UPAs) that can be applied to any movement or position of the body. The UPAs include breath awareness, balanced energetic action, optimal alignment, and full expression of the heart in our poses, which makes the practice safe and fun.  

  1. An Emphasis on Community or Kula

All of the elements of Anusara Yoga contribute to an experience of kula or community.  For example, class begins with a welcoming attitude and a Heart-oriented theme, followed by an inspiring practice that we can enjoy together.  Anusara Yoga teachers intersperse theme and alignment instructions with skillful observation and appropriate adjustments to make the class accessible and challenging for all!  Students often go from taking regular classes to registering for an Immersion or even a Teacher Training, which leads to the experience of this “community of the Heart.” And, we can meet lifelong friends along the way!

In 2012, a team of global Anusara Yoga teachers created the Anusara School of Hatha Yoga (ASHY) to preserve and further develop the core Anusara teachings and techniques that have transformed the lives of students and teachers all over the world.  I have served the School and community from the beginning and especially enjoy mentoring new teachers in their learning process. Since 2014, I have served as co-coordinator of our Curriculum Team. It’s a pleasure to be a part of the community in this way.

My Anusara Yoga Events

  • Weekly Classes

I offer online Anusara Yoga classes via Zoom on Mondays from 2 – 3:15 PM EST, and on Fridays from 10 – 11:15 AM EST.  Please contact me for more information and the Zoom link.  Each week, I send a class recording to friends/students who want to practice at another time.

  • The 200-Hour Anusara Yoga Teacher Training, in 2 parts

The first 100 hours of our 200-Hour Training is called an “Immersion” into the practice of Anusara Yoga.  The Immersion is open to all yoga students and is a wonderful opportunity to go deeper into your yoga practices and learn key concepts of Nondual Tantra.  The Immersion is also an opportunity to practice and study with others as a community, which is always fun.  My next Immersions will begin in April, one in the Netherlands and one in Sweden.

The Immersion is followed by a 100-Hour Anusara Teacher Training, which is devoted to learning how to teach a basic Anusara Yoga class.

  • 300-hour Advanced Anusara Teacher Training (including modules open to all students)

I was very happy to help create the 300-Hour Anusara Teacher Training for the Anusara school, which consists of 9 required modules and elective hours.  I offer these events on an ongoing basis, including upcoming modules about teaching an Anusara Yoga class, and the Philosophy of the Vijnanabhairava Tantra.
